Formal Corporate Environmental Policy
IPEC is dedicated to being a leader in its efforts to protect the environment and is committed to compliance with all environmental practices pertinent to our scope of business. These practices include all applicable regulatory, legal, and other requirements and implementing continual improvement and pollution prevention efforts. It is IPEC’s intent to minimize waste products and manage our materials and methods to reduce or eliminate any adverse impacts on the environment.
IPEC has implemented an Environmental Management System (EMS) consistent with the requirements of the ISO 14001 International Environmental Standard. This EMS is in place to identify, address, manage and improve the impact that our activities have on the environment through employee involvement and the setting and reviewing of environmental objectives and targets.
Environmental Mission Statement
IPEC is committed to being a responsible steward of the environment. This commitment is reflected in the products and services we provide to our customers, the design and operation of our facilities, the conditions under which our employees work, and the interactions with the communities where we live and do business.
We have chosen to be responsible stewards of the environment and to protect the health and well being of our employees and neighbors. We have made this choice to do our part based on our sincere belief that these efforts, whether in our work or personal lives, have a positive influence on the environment and do make a difference.
We recognize that these initiatives work in coordination with our continuous efforts to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Seeking and identifying opportunities to do more in this important area will continue to be a focus of IPEC not only for the protection and preservation of resources for the present, but also for future generations.
Energy Conservation Initiative
- All lighting installed in IPEC’s plants and offices have been replaced with environmentally friendly, mercury free, 'Green' light fixtures and bulbs. Replaced lighting has presented environmental benefit, improved lighting, and energy savings.
- Successfully increased mold cooling temperatures by approximately 8 degrees which resulted in significant reduction in energy consumption.
- Overall plant energy consumption is monitored through live electronic display. Consumption is tracked and trended against peak and managed to minimize impact.
Conservation Achievements
- All hard copy procedures, work instructions, and various forms have been eliminated via paperless system.
- Pay statements are distributed electronically.
- Computer stations and kiosks have been provided for all key personnel to access necessary information on line.
- Two sided copies are encouraged when copier is required for internal use.
- Good Environmental Practices (GEP’s) have been issued and implemented throughout the organization to establish expectations for behavior and practice of all employees.
- Unsolicited mailings, catalogs, etc. which are deemed unnecessary by recipient are collected and the originator is contacted to discontinue. Reduction in incoming materials has resulted in reduction of recycled and wasted materials.
- Coffee mugs and beverage containers have been provided for employees to eliminate the use of styrofoam cups.
- Internal programs to reduce energy consumed and switch to sustainable energy sourcing include turning lights out in unoccupied areas and purchasing plant and office supplies made with recycled materials whenever possible.
IPEC was awarded the International Bottled Water Association’s (IBWA) Environmental Stewardship Award in October of 2008 in recognition of our Environmental Management System. The purpose of this annual award is to recognize companies who have excelled in creating and implementing sustainable environmental systems and conservation measures in an effort to prevent and reduce waste resulting in protection of the environment. While many companies were in competition for this award, IPEC was awarded the first annual award during the annual bottled water show held in Las Vegas.
 The Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania (PROP) present the “Waste Watcher” Award on an annual basis to companies and businesses who have demonstrated exemplary performance in implementing and maintaining programs for recycling, waste reduction and reuse of products and materials that would have otherwise gone into the waste stream. The award showcases a company’s recycling and waste reduction achievements as an example to others in the Commonwealth. IPEC was presented with this prestigious award in July of 2009 and is one of only a few manufacturing facilities in PA to be recognized.
Recycling Initiative
- A recycling center has been provided by IPEC for collection of all office paper and paper products, plastic containers, and steel and aluminum cans in which all office employees participate. Employees with no recycling means at their homes are also encouraged to bring their recyclable items for deposit in the center.
- Recycling of corrugated products and materials through collection and sale to licensed recycler.
- Recycling of plastic by means of reintroduction or resale to result in less than 1% to waste disposal.
- Recycling of printer and copier ink and toner cartridges through an organization that refills and returns for re-use.
Carbon Footprint Minimization Efforts
- IPEC has completed research and evaluation to maximize the number of closures per case, cases per pallet, and pallets per trailer load. These combine to result in minimizing truck emissions, reduce logistic costs per load, and maximize efficiency of product handling.
- IPEC offers a box recycling program to customers in which boxes used for product can be returned for re-use. IPEC’s associated rebate program provides compensation to participants. This method of re-use provides opportunity for significant environmental impact.
- IPEC continuously researches and develops methods to design and redesign products to contain less materials and packaging, require less energy to produce, and result in less waste.
Communication
IPEC communicates key environmental initiatives via newsletter, intranet, routine e-mails, and messages on pay statements and external e-mails to increase awareness and to encourage everyone to get involved in their personal life and do their part.
Environmental Management System (EMS)
IPEC has successfully achieved corporate certification to the International ISO 14001 Environmental Standard. This Environmental Management System is in place to identify, address, manage and improve the impact that our activities have on the environment through employee involvement and the establishment and review of environmental objectives and targets. These practices include all applicable regulatory, legal, and other requirements and implementing continual improvement and pollution prevention efforts. It is IPEC’s intent to minimize waste products and manage our materials and methods to reduce or eliminate any adverse impacts on the environment. IPEC has established cooperation with suppliers and encourages assistance from customers to re-engineer how we make, package, and distribute our products to reduce energy use and waste.
